What is a necropsy?
Examination of an animal after death to determine cause of death and abnormal and disease related changes
What history is important before doing a necropsy?
Signalment, husbandry conditions, clinical signs, treatments, died vs euthanasia, weight
What is involved in the external examination during a necropsy ?
Site where animal was found (predators, poison, plans, trauma, parasites)
Evaluation nutritional & hydration status
External orifices (discharge, MM, teeth)
Skin lesions
What should you be looking for when doing an external exam?
All mucus membranes
How are the teeth?
External ears (exudate, parasites)
How are the joints? (Swollen?)
Feet (lesions, look between toes)
What instruments are used for necropsy?
Necropsy knives, scalpel blades & handles, scissors, forceps, bone cutting forceps, pruning shears, formalin & containers
How do you initially cut an animal for necropsy?
Cut down ventral midline
Cut medial aspect of limbs to reflect them
Reflect left and right halves of abdominal wall
Remove rib cage by cutting bilaterally on both sides
What information should go on a necropsy report?
All abnormalities must be described and recorded
Tentative conclusions must be written
All lesions must be described
What information is important for describing a lesion for necropsy report?
Location
How many
Color & size
Shape
Distribution & consistency
Odor
