Q

Define the Blood Barrier’s formation and function

A

It is formed by astrocytes; prevents harmful chemicals/waste products from entering brain but medications cant cross this barrier

Q

Explain the spinal cord’s function

A

it processes reflexes without brain involvement and provides the sensory pathway (periphery to brain), motor pathway (brain to periphery) and the reflex center (involuntary stim. response to external environment )

Q

Explain the spinal cord’s tracts

A

ascending : sensory (spinothalamic/dorsal column/spinocerebellar)
descending: motor (pyramidal/extrapyramidal)

Q

Where is the spinal cord located?

A

in the CNS extending from the foramen magnum to L1; the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar make up the vertebrae

Q

Will a lumbar puncture harm the spinal cord?

A

No, because the spine ends at L1 and spinal taps needles are inserted in the L3 and L4

Q

What is the phrenic nerve and its function?

A

stimulates diaphragm contraction which means if damaged, it will affect proper breathing (vent may be needed)

Q

Define the Hypothalamus’s function(s)

A

regulates body temp, water balance, metabolism etc; can have an effect on heart rate, BP, resps.

Q

What is the Medulla Oblongata and where is it found?

A

brain stem structure that relays sensory and motor info and controls heart rate, BP, and resps.; aka “vital center”; it is found at the end of the brainstem below the pons

Q

Define how the “left brain” or left hemisphere helps us

A

It is helps us with language, speech, analyzing external environment, mathematical abilities, and reasoning

Q

What is the axon and where can it be found?

A

A long extension of neuron (found in the CNS) that transmits signals away from the cell body

15
Q

What are some axon parts?

A

nodes of Ranvier: not covered by myelin, appear the myelinated axon intervals

Myelin sheath: fatty, white material insulating/protecting the the axon

Neurilemma: membrane-like material surrounding the axon

16
Q

Define a reflex

A

it is an involuntary response to a stimulus at the spinal cord’s level (spinal reflexes)

17
Q

Efferent vs. Afferent

A

afferent aka sensory neuron: impulse influenced from receptor along afferent to spinal cord

efferent aka motor neuron: impulse carried by efferent to a muscle

18
Q

What is the Sympathetic Nervous System and its indicators?

A

“fight or flight” response during confrontation or duress; pupil dilation, intestinal movement decrease, kidneys slow down (no pee), bronchodilation, increased resps. and BP, adrenaline rush

19
Q

What is the Parasympathetic Nervous System and its indicators?

A

“rest and digest” response during relaxation and rest; intestinal movement, voiding, regular resps and BP, sex,

20
Q

What are the receptors of the ANS divisions?

A

cholinergic: found in PNS and SNS and activated by ACh; nicotinic and muscarinic
adrenergic: found in SNS and bound by epi and norepinephrine; beta 1 and 2, alpha 1 (opens lungs, heart rate and BP increase)

21
Q

Where are sympathetic neurons located? where are parasympethetic neurons located?

A

SNS: neurons in thoracic and lumbar (organ supply via postganglionic neurons)
PNS: neurons found in craniosacral & stimulate cranial nerves/organs, ganglia (group of nerve cells) found parallel to spinal cord or near/in effector organ

22
Q

What are 2 neurotransmitters of the SNS?

A

ACh and noreipinephrine

23
Q

What is a ganglion?

A

group of nerve cell bodies linked by synapses, found between two neurons

24
Q

What are the ganglion components?

A

preganglionic fiber: neuron 1’s axon, comes before ganglion
postganglionic fiber: neuron 2’s axon (leaves/after the ganglion)

25
Q

True or False: postganglionic receptors for the PNS are muscarinic

A

True
