Nervous System Flashcards
(11 cards)
What is the function of the nervous system
Control the mental and physical activities of our body, monitor and respond, maintain homeostasis
Describe how a nerve impulses travels through a neuron
- Dendrite receives stimuli
- sends signal through cell body to axon
- axon sends an electrical wave where positive and negative charges switch in a wave-like motion
- Myelin shealth protects this electrical wave/axon
- at the axon terminal the electric pulse is converted into neurotransmitters that travel across the synapse
What is the function of the cerebrum?
Contains memories, thoughts, emotions, interprets sensory information
What is the function of the cerebellum?
Coordination and movement
What is the function of the Medulla Oblongata?
Involuntary actions: breathing, heart rate
Brain stem
What is the function of the dendrites?
Receive information from other neurons or the environment
What is the function of the Schwann cells and Milan sheath?
To insulate the axon so it’s electricity is correctly conducted and controlled
What is the function of the spinal cord?
Carries information to and from the brain; responsible for reflexes
What structure allows the two hemispheres of your brain to communicate with each other?
Corpus callosum
What structures make up the central nervous system?
Brain and spinal cord
This two diseases or injuries that affect the nervous system and how they affect the system
Epilepsy- nerve cell activity in brain is Disturbed, causing seizures, (abnormal electrical activity)
Parkinson’s disease-loss of muscle control, shaking, caused by nerve cell damage
