Nervous System Flashcards
(10 cards)
what’s the role of the nervous system
its role is to protect an organism from harm by responding to changes from the internal and external environment
how does the nervous system act out its defensive mechanic actions
by coordinating communication between different parts of a multicellular organism
what are the 3 things the Nervous System/CNS is made up of
1) Brain
2) The Neurones
3) Spinal Cord
what does the CNS do
the CNS coordinates the response of the effectors
what are effectors
effectors are muscles/glands that act in response to changes in the internal and external environment
what does the spinal cord do
the spinal cord is important in coordinating the response of effectors to changes in the environment
what do neurones do
neurones carry electrical impulses between receptors, the CNS and effectors
what are synapses
synapses are gaps between neurones that nerve impulses must travel across
explain the synapses overcoming process
1) The electrical impulse reaches the end of the neurone before the synapse.
2) This triggers the release of chemicals called neurotransmitters.
3) The neurotransmitters diffuse across the synapse.
4) The neurotransmitters bind to receptors on the next neurone.
5) The presence of the neurotransmitter causes the production of an electrical impulse in the next neurone.
6) Many drugs, such as heroin act on synapses, affecting the transmission of nerve impulses.
What triggers the release of neurotransmitters at a synapse in the brain?
Electrical Impulses
