Reflexes Flashcards
(13 cards)
what do reflex actions allows us to do
reflex actions allow us to respond to dangerous situations rapid and automatically
how does the nervous system respond to stimuli
the nervous system responds to stimuli via a reflex arc
give 3 examples of reflexes
1) Dropping hot objects
2) Sneezing
3) Blinking
how/what is a stimulus detected by
a stimulus is detected by a receptor
what can a stimulus be
a stimulus can be any change in the environment to which the body needs to respond
what are the 5 different parts of a reflex arc
1) Stimulus
2) Receptor
3) Coordinators
4) Effector
5) Response
where are receptors found
receptors are found all over the body
what do receptors do
receptors detect a change in the environment and initiate a signalling process in the body
what is the signal picked up by
signals are picked up by a neurone
what are the 3 types of Neurone Cell
1) Sensory neurone
2) The relay neurone (in the CNS)
3) The motor neurone
what does the sensory, relay and motor neurone do
1) Sensory - carries the signal in the form of an electrical impulse to the CNS
2) Relay - relays the electrical impulse from the sensory neurone to the appropriate motor neurone
3) Motor - carries the electrical impulse from the CNS to an effector
What happens when a motor neurone carries a signal to an effector?
a response occurs
Why are reflex actions important?
they let us react to dangerous situations quickly and automatically
