nervous system part 3 Flashcards
(16 cards)
What part of the nervous system is the spinal cord a part of?
The spinal cord is part of the Central Nervous System (CNS).
What protects the spinal cord?
The spinal cord is protected by the vertebral column, meninges, and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF).
What is the shape of the spinal cord?
The spinal cord has a cylindrical shape.
Where does the spinal cord end?
The spinal cord ends at the L1/L2 lumbar vertebra.
How much of the vertebral column does the spinal cord occupy?
The spinal cord occupies 2/3 of the vertebral column.
What are the two enlargements of the spinal cord?
The two enlargements are the cervical enlargement and the lumbar enlargement.
What is the function of spinal nerves?
Spinal nerves are the path of communication between the spinal cord and specific regions of the body.
How many pairs of spinal nerves are there?
There are 31 pairs of spinal nerves: 8 cervical, 12 thoracic, 5 lumbar, 5 sacral, and 1 coccygeal.
What are the two types of matter in the internal anatomy of the spinal cord?
The two types of matter are white matter and grey matter.
What is found in white matter?
White matter contains myelinated axons of neurons and glia.
What is found in grey matter?
Grey matter contains unmyelinated axons of neurons, glia, dendrites, and neuron cell bodies.
What are afferent and efferent fibers?
Afferent fibers carry sensory information to the spinal cord, while efferent fibers carry motor commands from the spinal cord.
Why is it important to determine the segmental level of a spinal cord injury?
It is very important to determine the segmental level of an injury to the spinal cord or spinal nerve roots.
What are dermatomes?
Dermatomes are skin surface areas that are supplied by a single spinal nerve.
What is a dermatome map?
A dermatome map illustrates the areas of skin supplied by each spinal nerve.
What condition is associated with dermatomes?
Herpes zoster (Shingles) is associated with dermatomes.
