NEURO 8 Flashcards
(10 cards)
Guillain Barre Syndrome presents with what pathopneumonic finding on EMG/NCS?
What is the classic CSF finding?
Conduction block AND prolonged F-wave latencies.
CSF = cytoalbuminergic dissociation = increased CSF protein.
Guillain Barre Syndrome treatment?
IVIG or plasmapharesis.
What is the spinal cord level/dermatome is each area associated with?
Back of the head? Above collar bone? Thumb? Middle finger? Pinky? Nipple? Belly button? Groin? Lateral thigh? Medial thigh? Medial leg? Lateral leg and big toe? Sole of foot? Perianal area?
Back of the head = C2 Above collar bone = C4 Thumb = C6 Middle finger = C7 Pinky = C8 Nipple = T4 Belly button = T10 Groin = L1 Lateral thigh = L2 Medial thigh = L3 Medial leg = L4 Lateral leg and big toe = L5 Sole of foot = S1 Perianal area = S5
What three receptors are associated with Glutamate?
- AMPA
- Kainate
- NMDA
What receptors are the following neurotransmitters associated with?
Acetylcholine?
NE?
Serotonin?
GABA?
Dopamine?
Acetylcholine = nicotinic and muscarinic receptors
NE = α 1, α2, and β receptors
Serotonin = 5HT receptors
GABA = GABA receptors
Dopamine = D1, D2, ext.
What is the classic presentation of diabetic third nerve palsy?
What other disease do you need to rule out with similar presentation?
Acute onset unilateral eye pain, ptosis, and diplopia. Exam reveals NORMAL pupillary reflex, but problem Adduction of eye.
Internal Carotid Artery (ICA) Aneurysm - will have DILATED pupils.
Middle cerebral artery stroke can present with what visual deficits?
Contralateral Homonymous Hemianopsia
OR
Contralateral inferior quadrantanopia (pie slice)
Neurotransmitters in the synaptic cleft are degraded MAOs…What neurotransmitters does MAO-A and MAO-B act on?
MAO- A ==> NE and Serotonin
MAO- B ==> Dopamine
Lesch-Nyhan Syndrome results from an X-linked recessive disorder causing hyperuricemia due to deficit in what enzyme?
Hypoxanthine-guanine Phosphoribosyltransferase.
What is the classic presentation of Lesch-Nyhan Syndrome?
- Self- Mutilation
- Choreoathetotic movements
- Cognitive impairment a
- Developmental delay
- Hypotonia
- Hyper-refexia
- Dysarthria
