What are the major divisions of the brain?
Forebrain, Midbrain, Hindbrain
What are the subdivisions of the forebrain?
Telencephalon and Diencephalon
What structures are found in the telencephalon?
Cerebral cortex, basal ganglia, limbic system
What structures are in the diencephalon?
Thalamus and Hypothalamus
What are the parts of the midbrain (mesencephalon)?
Tectum and Tegmentum
What structures are in the hindbrain?
Metencephalon (pons, cerebellum) and Myelencephalon (medulla oblongata)
What is the function of the basal ganglia?
Control of movement and reward systems
What are the components of the basal ganglia?
Caudate nucleus, Putamen, Globus pallidus
What is the striatum composed of?
Caudate nucleus and Putamen
What is the function of the limbic system?
Emotion, memory, motivation
What are the components of the limbic system?
Hippocampus, Amygdala, Fornix, Mammillary bodies, Limbic cortex
What is the hippocampus important for?
Memory consolidation and spatial navigation
What is the amygdala important for?
Emotional responses, especially fear
What is the role of the thalamus?
Relay sensory information to the cortex
What is the function of the hypothalamus?
Regulates autonomic nervous system and controls the pituitary gland
What does the tectum include?
Superior and Inferior colliculi
What does the tegmentum include?
Reticular formation, Periaqueductal gray, Red nucleus, Substantia nigra
What is the function of the pons?
Relays information from cortex to cerebellum, regulates sleep and arousal
What is the function of the cerebellum?
Coordination and precision of movement
What is the function of the medulla oblongata?
Regulates breathing, heart rate, and muscle tone
Which structure relays sensory info to the cortex?
Thalamus
Which brain structure is associated with memory and spatial navigation?
Hippocampus
Which brain structure is part of the diencephalon and regulates hormones?
Hypothalamus
