NEUROLOGY AND BEHAVIOUR Flashcards
(47 cards)
What is meninges
Membrane that surround brain
What are the 4 spaces of brain called
Ventricles
What do cell lining in ventricles produce
Cerebro spinal fluid
3 features of cerebro spinal fluid
- supplies nutrients
- supplies oxygen
- contains antibodies and white blood cells
What are the 3 region of brain called
Forebrain
Midbrain
Hindbrain
What does hindbrain control
Basic homeostatic functions
2 things that are contained in hindbrain
- cerebellum
- medulla oblongata
What does cerebellum do
Carries out voluntary tasks requiring fine muscle control
What does medulla oblongata do
Basic homeostatic functions like blood pressure and heartbeat , thirst
What does midbrain do
Relay information for vision and hearing
What does forebrain contain
Limbic system
What is the components of forebrain limbic system
Thalamus
Hypothalamus
Hippocampus
Where is autonomic nervous system regulated in
Hypothalamus
Where does sympathetic NS show in Spinal cord
Grey matter
Ganglions outside spinal cord
Describe what happens to heart rate and ANS during exercise
- cardio-acceleratory centre is stimulated
-nervous impulse travels along sympathetic nerve fibres to SAN
-neurotransmitter noradrenaline released
-binds to cell membrane receptors on SAN - SAN electrical discharge frequency increases
- heart rate increases
Describe what happens to ANS and heart rate when sleeping
-cardio-inhibitory centre is stimulated
-nervous impulse travels to parasympathetic nerve fibres to SAN
-neurotransmitter acetylcholine released
-binds to cell membrane receptors on SAN
-SAN electrical discharge decreases in frequency
-heart rate decreases
Which cerebral hemisphere is dominant
Left
4 features of cerebral hemisphere
- outer most 2-3mm is grey (cell bodies)
- inner areas white (myelinated)
- folded
- evolutionary link - neocortex
Name 4 lobes of cerebral hemisphere
Frontal
Temporal
Parietal
Occipital
Describe frontal lobe
Personality
Emotion , reasoning , planning , problem solving
Broca’s area for speech in dominant hemisphere
Contains motor cortex
Describe temporal lobe
Auditory cortex
Learning and memory
Left hemisphere - wenicke area
Lateral
Describe parietal lobe
Taste
Visual / spacial processing
Somatosensory cortex
Describe occipital lobe
Vision
What does sensory cortex do
Receives external input from body sensors by the thalamus
