The nervous system is divided into two namely?
- Central nervous system
- Peripheral nervous system
What are the two divisions of the peripheral nervous system
- Somatic nervous system
- Autonomic nervous system
Differentiate somatic and autonomic nervous system.
Somatic nervous system - voluntary movements (skeletal)
Autonomic nervous system - involuntary movements (ex. heartbeat)
What are the two components under central and peripheral nervous system?
Central nervous system - brain and spinal cord
Peripheral nervous system - cranial and spinal nerves
The basic unit of communication in the nervous system is called?
Neurons/Nerve cells
Are the basic functional units of structure and functions of the nervous system.
Neurons/Nerve cells
A part of the neuron which contains nucleus, cytoplasm and organelles.
Cell body/soma
A part of the neuron which receives and carries information TOWARD the cell body.
Dendrites
A part of the neuron that carries messages AWAY from the cell body. Long, tail-like fiber that extends from the cell body.
Axon
Covers the axon. It speeds up the travel of the nerve impulse.
Myelin sheath
It passes on the messages to the dendrites of the other neurons.
Axon terminals
Is a small gap at the end of a neuron that allows a signal to pass from one neuron to the next.
Synapse
Name all the parts of a neuron.

What are the types of neurons?
- Sensory Neurons/Afferent Neurons
- Interneurons/Connector Neurons
- Motor Neurons/Efferent Neurons
Receive initial stimuli from the sense organs where more receptors are located.
Sensory Neurons/Afferent Neurons
Found in the brain and spinal cord and sends message to the motor neuron.
Interneuron/Connector Neurons
Receive messages from the brain and spinal cord and send it to the muscles or glands.
Motor Neurons
