NITROGEN AHH CYCLE Flashcards
(3 cards)
ts nitrogen cycle 1 (3 points)
- nitrogen in atmosphere is fixed by lightning - converted into nitrates
- these nitrates then fall to the ground, enter the soil and are then absorbed by the roots
- Nitrates are used to make proteins and DNA! 🙂
ts nitrogen cycle 2 (5 points)
nitrogen fixing bacteria can be found free in the soil/ live in the nodules of plants called legumes
-nitrogen fixing bacteria can convert nitrogen to ammonia
the ammonia is then used by NITRIFYING bacteria- converts ammonia into NITRITES
it then converts nitrites into nitrates, which are then absorbed by plant to make proteins + DNA
animals can eat the plants and use the nitrogen from the plant proteins to build their proteins + DNA
ts nitrogen cycle 3 (4 points) (LAST)
organisms urinate which adds urea to the soil
organisms can also die
decomposers are bacteria that break down protein and urea into ammonia which NITRIFYING bacteria then convert to nitrites then nitrates (sound familiar? 😏)
denitrifying bacteria convert nitrates into nitrogen
