no effort made for translation, no equivalent terms and agreements made in a european manner

eurocentrism was a key part, europeans trying to get the indigenous to be more like them (assimilation)

goal: bring indigenous into “mainstream” society (healthcare, rights, etc.) by getting rid of separation legislation

the gov didn’t consult the indigenous about this so they didn’t want it

seen as a threat to treaty rights
