notes 15 indigenous experiences of liberalism canada Flashcards
(5 cards)
3 main flaws of the treaty system
no effort made for translation, no equivalent terms and agreements made in a european manner
eurocentrism was a key part, europeans trying to get the indigenous to be more like them (assimilation)
doesn’t span all of canada
indian act
consolidating previous colonial laws about first nations
defined who was considered indigenous and what they were allowed to do
attempt to control their traditions and culture (reserves, residential schools)
indigenous people literally wards of the state
option to surrender whole indigenous identity and way of life for normal rights
white paper
1969
attempt at being better than US and germany at respecting minority races
goal: bring indigenous into “mainstream” society (healthcare, rights, etc.) by getting rid of separation legislation
the gov didn’t consult the indigenous about this so they didn’t want it
seen as a threat to treaty rights
example of IMPOSITION OF LIBERALISM
imposition of liberalism + example
when people come into other places trying to force their own rules and laws (liberal system) on a pre-existing regime, replace it without consent
ex. the white paper law (1969) against the indigenous in canada
red paper
1970
outlined objections indigenous had to white paper
treaties and the legislative rights of indigenous peoples should both be upheld (treaties were previously mostly ignored by gov)
indigenous self-determination
land access should respect historical and legal rights (not owned by gov/”crown”)
