1940s/50s
- period of american suspicion of soviet spies, led by senator mccarthy
- created committee on un-american activities (HUAC) created to find soviet spies in american government
- labeled many in society as communist sympathizers by calling them to witness, destroying careers and ruining lives
- never found one spy
