Respiration and Gas Exchange Flashcards
(15 cards)
Anaerobic respiration word equation
Glucose = Lactic acid
Why is anaerobic respiration less efficient?
Oxidisation of glucose is incomplete
Anaerobic respiration (fermentation) in yeast word equation
Glucose = Ethanol + carbon dioxide
Oxygen debt
The amount of oxygen required to break down the accumulated lactic acid after exercise
Adenosine triphosphate (ATP)
Energy-carrying molecule that occurs within all living organisms
Practical for effect of temperature on rate of respiration
Get a U-tube respirometer attached to two boiling tubes with CO2 absorbing Soda Lime at the bottom, and germinating seeds in the middle for one, and glass pellets in the middle for the other. Place the respirometer in a temperature controlled water bath. For the germinating seed, the U-tube will read a higher number.
Main use of the ribcage
To protect the thorax
Main use of the intercostal muscles
To contract and increase the volume of the lungs for diffusion of air into them, and to relax and decrease the volume of lungs for air to diffuse out
Diaphragm
Sheet of muscle at bottom of thorax that contracts and increases the volume of the lungs for diffusion of air into them, and relaxes and decreases the volume of lungs for air to diffuse out
Main use of the larynx
Voice box; produces sound
Trachea
Tube that carries air from throat into bronchi
Bronchi
Two tubes that branch off from trachea and lead to each lung
Bronchioles
Tiny tubes that branch off from the bronchi and carry air to the alveoli
Alveoli
Site of gas exchange; air sacs where gas exchange takes place
Pleural membrane
Thin, doubled layer membrane that surrounds the lungs and reduces friction when the lungs expand
