(13 cards)
Four different types of proteins? (nutrition)
Structural
Protective Barrier
Transport, Communication
Enzymatic
Two primary assessments of malnutrition?
Degree of height stunting (stopping)
Degree of wasting height (actually being reduced)
What is energy Consumption determined by? what is this in turn determined by?
Energy expenditure, which is determined by BMR and level of habitual activity.

Carbs - 50%
Lipid - 35%
Protein - 15%
What is growth essentially caused by?
Increased deposition of protein.
If nitrogen was leaving the body would that mean protein was going in or out?
In.
How is Nitrogen mostly excreted from the body?
Urine, Stool, Sweat.
What three hormones mostly influence the regulation of muscle RNA?
Insulin, Thyroid hormone, Corticosterone.
What is the definition of height stunting?
Lower height than expected for age.
What mostly influences the growth of children in infancy, Childhood and then pubertal? (Separately)

Childhood: Growth hormone driven
Pubertal: Sex-steroid driven

A low birth weight increases the risk.
How is treatment of malnutrition organised?
Screen - Recognise - Treat (enteral, Parenteral, Oral) - Monitor and document - Review.
The inflammatory response causes what in relation to protein metabolism and synthesis?
Increased protein metabolism and decreased protein synthesis.
