What is the difference in the social model and the medical model?

A

Medical model focuses on the the disabled person as the problem.

The social model focuses on society as the problem and this not being suitable for the disabled person.

Can improve life for individuals

A

Helpful:

  • Improved communication
  • Improved healthcare

Unhelpful:

  • Feel deskilled/threatened as role of doctor is less important.
  • May prevent patients from having best quality of life.
  • Doctors feel it is not ‘their’ role to intervene.
