Oncology Flashcards
(10 cards)
Define generation time of the cell?
The time from when a cell enters the cell cycle to when the cell divides into two identical cells.
Define the contact inhibition?
Normal cells respect the boundaries and territory of the cells surrounding them.
Define the pyramid effect ?
Proliferation of the cancer cells it’s indiscriminate and continuous sometimes they produce more than two cells at the time of mitosis in this way there is a continuous growth of a tumor mass.
Define doubling time?
The time required for a tumor mass to double in size.
Define cell differentiation?
An orderly process that progresses from a state of immaturity A State of maturity
Define Protooncogenes?
Normal cell genes that are important regulators of normal cell processes; they promote growth whereas tumor suppressor genes suppress growth.
Oncogenes are?
Tumor inducing genes.
Mutations that alter the expression of protooncogenes can activate them to function as?
oncogenes (tumor inducing genes)
Define tumor suppressor genes?
They function to regulate cell growth and prevent cells from growing through the cell cycle.
Carcinoma in situ CIS referes to what?
A neoplasm whose cells are localized and show no tendency to invade or metastasize to other tissues.
