Organelles Flashcards
(16 cards)
Nucleus- structure and function
double membrane, contains chromatin and nucleolus
contains the genetic information , c&n produce ribosomes
Rough endoplasmic reticulum- structure and function
flattened sacs enclosed by a ribosome studded membrane
folds and processes proteins made on the ribosmes
Smooth endoplasmic reticulum- structure and function
membrane bound sacs
produces and processes lipids
Golgi apparatus- structure and function
fluid filled, flattened and curved sacs with vesicles
processes and packages proteins and lipids, also produces lysosomes
Mitochondria- structure and function
oval-shaped, double membrane, inner membrane folded to form christae with internal matrix
site of respiration
Ribosomes- structure and function
two sub units
site of protein production
Lysosome- structure and function
single membrane
contains digestive membranes
Cell wall- structure and function
plant cells- cellulose, procaryotes- murein
rigid outer covering in procaryotes and plant cells
Capsule -
slimy outer layer
protects the cell, retains moisture, allows it to adhere to surfaces
Plasmid- structure and function
circular dna, not associate with histones
contains the genetic information
Flagellum- function
rotates to allow the movement of the cell
Pili- function
hair-like structures that allow for the binding to other bacterial cells
Vacuole- structure and function
contains cell sap which is a store of chemicals and mineral ions
helps maintain the pressure within the cell, isolates harmful chemicals
Capsid- function
protects the virus from the external environment
Attachment proteins- function
on the surface of viral capsids, used to bind to host cells
