10-step ethical decision-making process

A
  1. Identify the problem or concern.
  2. Study pertinent codes of ethics and research.
  3. Reflect on the principles of autonomy, nonmaleficence, beneficence, justice, and fidelity.
  4. Consult with other professionals.
  5. Maintain an awareness of your emotions to ensure that emotions do not cloud your judgment.
  6. Include the client in the decision-making process whenever feasible.
  7. Decide how you would like to see the situation resolved and brainstorm courses of action.
  8. Examine the possible consequences for all courses of action and then select the one you would like to take.
  9. Assess your chosen course of action.

confidentiality

A

Confidentiality promotes establishment of a trusting environment and facilitates the development of the therapeutic alliance. However, exceptions to client confidentiality are allowable in certain instances, including suicidal or homicidal ideation, child abuse, elder abuse, and dependent adult abuse.
