oxygen requirements/ temperature ranges Flashcards
(16 cards)
Microarrophiles
Require limited amount of atmospheric oxygen. Excess oxygen blocks the activity of oxidative enzyme.
= death
Growth in slightly below the surface
Aerobes
Require pretense of atmospheric oxygen for growth.
Use O2 and final H acceptor to to oxidate high energy molecules ex, glucose
Surface growth
Obligated anaerobes
Require absence of oxygen for growth
Oxidative enzyme requires precense of molecules other than O2
Aerotolerant Anaerobes
Fermentative organisms.
Do not use O2 as a final electron acceptor.
Grow constant thought the medium.
Facultative anaerobes
Can grow in absence or presence of O2.
Use O2 for anaerobic respiration.
Grow thought the medium mostly close to surface.
Temperature range
With increasing temp Enzyme activity increases until the three dimensional configuration is lost because of denaturation of protein structure.
Lower temp toward freezing point- enzyme inactivation occurs and cellular metabolism gradually diminishes.
Minimum growth temp
Lowest temperature at which growth will occur.
Due to enzyme and cell metabolic inactivation growth is negligible or absent.
Maximum growth temp.
Highest temp at which growth will occur.
Above max temp most cell enzymes are destroyed and organism dies.
Optimum growth temp
Rate of reproduction is most rapid
Not ideal for all enzymatic activity of cell.
Temp- Phsycrophiles
Bacterial that would grow within temp range of 0-20*C.
Characteristic- grow between 0 and 5*C
Temp- Mesophiles
Bacteria that will grow at temp. Range of 20-45 *C
Char.- ability to grow at human body temp. 37C and inability to grow above 45C
Mesophile- plant saprophytes
Optimum growth temp 20-30*C.
Mesophile- Parasyte
Optimum growth temp. 35-40*C
Prefer to grow in warm blooded host.
Thermophiles
Bacteria that will grow at 35*C and above
Facultative thermophile
Organism that grow at 35C with optimum growth temp. Of 45-60C.
Obligated Thermophiles
Organisms that will grow in temp above 50*C
Optimum growth temp above 60*C
