What is ascension?
The event, 40 days after the resurrection when Jesus returned to God, the Father, in heaven
What is atonement?
Restoring the relationship between God and humanity
What is heaven?
A state of eternal happiness in the presence of God
What is hell?
Eternal suffering , place of sin
What is salvation?
Saving the soul, deliverance from sin
What does it mean to forgive?
Show grace and mercy and pardoning someone for wrong doings
Define evangelism
The spreading of the Christian gospel by public preaching or personal witness.
Give 3 examples of Christian charities that respond to persecution
Catholic agency for overseas development (CAFOD) , Christian Aid, Tearfund
Why is church growth important?
To spread Gods word
What are street pastors ?
A network of Christian volunteers around the UK who work in their local community
What is worship?
The way Christians show their love and respect to God
What is a baptism?
The ritual through which people become members of the church. It involves the use of water as a symbol of washing away sins
What is Holy communion/ Eucharist?
Uses bread and wine to celebrate, thank God and remember the sacrifices of Jesus dying on the cross and resurrecting, symbolises blood and body in Roman Catholics
Define reconciliation
Restoring of harmony/agreement after relationships have broken down. It is a sacrament in the Roman Catholic Church
What is pilgrimage?
A pilgrimage is a journey made for religious reasons to a secret place either physical or spiritual journey towards God
What liturgical worship?
Church services which follow a set order and structure, traditional, priest reads out set prayers, orthodox, images and candles used
What is informal worship?
Doesn’t involve a set routine often called spontaneous worship, Quakers worship in silence, no leader, no images or candles
What is nonliturgical worship?
Worship that doesn’t have set routines or rituals, usually gospel churches, lively which include singing and dancing, loud, emotional impact
What are the seven sacraments?
Holy communion, baptism, confirmation, marriage, holy orders, reconciliation, anointing of the stick
Why is holy communion important?
Brings the community of the church together, share the same mail therefore equal, remember and reflect on the sacrifice of Jesus to save them from sin
What are two different viewpoints of holy communion?
Roman Catholics – bread and wine become the actual body and blood of Christ, well is wrong to showing this has happened, Lord’s prayer is said, congregation go to the altar to receive
Non-Conformist- bread and wine are symbols of Christ’s body and blood, OpenTable to anyone to take bread wine, what Jesus said at the last supper or repeated by the minister
What is Iona?
And island which is a place of pilgrimage due to it being a “thin place“ where the veil between the spiritual world in the physical world is thin, holds daily services
What is Lourdes?
A place in Southwest France which is a place of pilgrimage dedicated to Mary the mother of Jesus it is said to be a place of 69 miracles and over 6000 cures that have taken place here
