What is the Torah?
First five Books of Moses which grind the basis of Jewish law
What is the tenahk?
Written scriptures 24 books - Christians call this the Old Testament
What is mishnah?
6 sections dietary laws, marriage, divorce, law of Shabbat etc
What are the 4 key branches of Judaism?
Orthodox, conservative , reconstruction, reform
Define Orthodox Jews
Traditional branch of Judaism, maximally maintained the Jewish strict laws that follow the Torah
Define conservative Jews
Do use Jewish law or halakha as both binding and subject to historical development
Define reform Jews
Liberal Jews who interpret the Torah for modern society
What do the 10 Commandments split into?
First four – relationship between Jews plus God, next six – relationship with each other
What is the covenant between God and Abraham?
God promises Abrahams descendants, land on his own which is the promised land he must only worship God and all males must be circumcised as a symbol of this covenant
What is mitzvot?
The 613 commandments given in the Torah
What are Jewish laws called?
Halakhah
What are the key features of a synagogue ?
- Ark- sacred place where Torah is kept
- Menorah- T branched candlesticks
- Torah- Jewish Holy book/ scrolls
- Nev Tamid- ever burning light, symbolises Gods eternal presence
- Bimah- reading platform
- Yad- pointer so Torah is read
What is a minyan ?
A group of 10 adults required for a service in the synagogue to go ahead
Define shul
Meaning school or place of study. Orthodox Jews often called the synagogues this
What does the star of David represent?
This famous Jewish symbol represents King David in the Bible who is famous for killing Goliath
What does the menorah symbolise?
It represents the light of God and symbolises the 1st to be “light into the nations “, symbolise the Jewish people to act similarly
What does the Nev tamid symbolise?
God’s eternal presence
How many times do Jews pray a day?
Orthodox - 3
Formal prayers are held in synagogue in morning, afternoon and evenings
What is a Aleinu prayer?
Prayer at end of each of the three daily services and gives praise and thanks to God
What symbolises the sweetness and joy of the day at shabbat?
Kiddush
What is Havdalah?
Sweet spices are passed around the hopeful sweet actions in the coming week and so the memory of Shabat lingers into week like the scent of the spices
What is havadlah?
Mean separation, showing that Shabat is separate from the rest of the week
Do you Jewish boys and girls have their bar/bat mitzvah during the Saturday Shabat service?
Yes
How many times is Shabbat celebrated?
At least 52 times a year
