P2 Flashcards
(25 cards)
What is a vector ?
It has magnitude (size) and direction
What is a scalar ?
It only has magnitude (size)
What is on the axis of a distance time graph ?
Time on the X-axis
Distance on the Y-axis
What does the gradient show on a distance time graph ?
The velocity
What is on the axis on a velcity time graph ?
Time on the X-axis
Velocity on the Y-axis
On a velocity-time graph what does the gradient show ?
The acceleration
What does the area underneath a distance time graph represent ?
The total distance travelled
What is gravitational attraction ?
The attraction that occurs between particles with mass
What is an electrostatic interaction ?
The force of attraction between charged particles
What direction are contact forces experienced in ?
The opposite direction to the contact
What do free body for diagrams show ?
The direction of forces present on an object in a situation
What is newtons first law ?
An object has a constant velocity unless acted on by a resultant force
In newtons first law what happens if it is acted on by a resultant force ?
The object will accelerate
What is newtons 2nd law ?
The acceleration or deceleration experienced depends on the direction and magnitude of the resultant for - Force = mass x acceleration
What is newtons 3rd law ?
Every action has an equal and opposite reaction
What is work done ?
Work is done when energy is transferred from one store to another - Work done = force x distnace
What is deformation ?
A change in shape
What is elastic deformation ?
When an object will return to its original shape when the load is removed.
What is plastic deformation ?
when a material doesn’t return to its original shape after being stretched by a force
What does a linear line on a force extension graph represent ?
The elastic deformation follows hookes law - the gradient is equal to k
What does a non-linear line on a force extension graph represent ?
Non elastic behaviour - it does not obey hookes law
What is power ?
The amount of energy transferred per second
What is mass ?
The amont of matter in an object
What is weight ?
The force caused by gravity
