What are the major functions of material management?
Project planning and communications Takeoff and engineering interface Organization and personnel Vendor inquiry and evaluation Purchasing Expediting Transportation Field material management QA and Qc Warehousing Surplus management
What is material management?
The planning and controlling of all necessary efforts to insure that the right quality and quantity of materials and equipment are appropriately specified in a timely manner, and are available when needed.
Define material related responsibilities for the owner, engineer, contractor, and subcontractors
Owner/engineer = engineering equipment Contractor/subcontractor = bulk materials
Communications between owners/ engineers and contractors
Restricted site access Lay down areas Multiple design engineers Anticipated design changes Purchasing approval Cash flow restrictions QA/QC procedures Site security policy Clean up and EPA compliance
Communications from the contractor to the owner/engineer?
Site material handling procedures Material delivery schedule Material usage schedule Warehousing plan Protected materials handling Lay down areas Traffic controls Manpower
What are three things that are a part of material take offs?
Material requisitions
Material tracking
Material requirements by:
- category, subcontractors, craft, fabrication, date
What do purchase orders include?
Purchase order numbers Unit price Quantity Material commodity code Vendor name Need and promise dates Drawing/requisition number Expediter's remarks
What is the objective of expediting?
To assist material vendors in meeting their contractual commitments.
To provide timely info regarding material deliveries and vendor data.
What are the requirements by field personnel and the expediter?
Filed personnel to expediter
- material requirements, changes, quality
Expediter to field personnel
- delivery schedule, specs/details
What are the factors in vendor inquiry and evaluation?
Cost Delivery Production capacity Geography Owner preference State laws and regulations Previous vendor performance
What are typical factors to consider in regards to transportation?
Rates Routing Inspections Methods Schedule Handling equipment Insurance Costs Claims
What are some responsibilities of field material controls?
1) document received materials (quantity, quality, storage)
2) control of issued materials (request to match bill of materials)
3) warehouse and lay down area inventory (periodic and spot check)
What is the ideal delivery type?
Just in time delivery
What benefits does just in time delivery offer?
Reduced costs in:
- material storage
- material handling
- material protection
What are the causes of surplus?
- Poorly performed quantity take off
- Design changes
- Poor control system
- duplicate buying
What are options for surplus handling?
- Resource allocation
- provision to return unused bulk materials and commodities
What is quality assurance?
A planned and systematic pattern of allocations necessary to provide adequate confidence that a product will conform to established requirements
What is quality control?
Procedures to implement quality plan for conformance to established requirements
What are necessary considerations for warehousing?
- Planning indoor/outdoor storage
- joint operation of owner and contractors
- security
- theft
- vandalism
- weather
What make up the costs of a materials management system?
- Design and set up of system
- Computer hardware/software
- Personnel hours
What are the benefits of a materials management system?
- Improve labor productivity
- Reduce surplus
- Reduce material management manpower
- cash flow savings
What are the three stages of materials management?
1) Planning
2) Execution
3) Post project evaluation
