Pancreas Lecture Flashcards
Second largest gland
Pancreas
T/F Pancreas is an accessory digestive gland
T
T/F Pancreas is similar to salivary gland
T
T/F Pancreas has exocrine and endocrine fxns
T
Pancreas is derived from
Endoderm
What is the beginning of the duct system of the pancreas?
Centroacinar cells
–>Exocrine fxn
What do acinar cells do in pancreas
Make, store, and release digestive enzymes
What do centroacinar cells make
Bicarbonate rich buffer and water
Acinar cells basal and apical sides
Basal has rich RER and basophilic
Apical has zymogen granules and acidophilic
Why is bicarbonate important?
Regulates pH to help enzymes properly fxn
What helps form centroacinar cells?
-Epithelium
Intercalated ducts extend into lumen of acinus and have flattened cuboidal epithelium.
Receieve secretions from acini
What receives secretions from intercalated ducts
-epithelium
Intralobular ducts
-cuboidal epithelium
What’s found between lobules w/n CT septae
Interlobular ducts
-Simple cuboidal epithelium or columna-size varies so epithelium does too
3 major groups of enzymes secreated by pancreas
Proteases
Pancreatic lipases
Amylases
Proteases
Does majority of protein digestion
Trypsin is major player. Trypsin inhibitor should be present because without, trypsin would digest everything and cause acute pancreatitis.
Pancreatic lipase
Triglyceride
Can’t be directly absorbed so digested into 2 monoglycerides and 2 FA. Bile salts are needed
Amylase
Breaks down starch
What innervates the pancreas
X
Applies low level stimulus to secretion in response to anticipation of a meal
CCK
Secreted by SI when fat detected
Cholecystokinin
“move the bile sac”.
Stimulates acinar cells to secrete large amounts of proteases and lipase and cause gallbladder to contract.
Secretin
Secreted by SI
Causes pancreatic duct (centroacinar cells/intercalated ducts) to secrete water and bicarbonate to lower pH so pancreatic enzymes can fxn properly.
Gastrin
Secreted by stomach
Stimulates pancreatic acinar cells to secrete digestive enzymes.
Endocrine component of pancreas
Islet of Langerhans/pancreatic islets
Cell types in pancreatic islets
alpha (glucagon)
beta (insulin)
PP (pancreatic polypeptide)
delta (somatostatin)
Exocrine component of pancreas
Glandular acinus and duct system
