PAPER 2 (existence of god and revelation) Flashcards
(22 cards)
what is the design argument
because everything it so intricately made that it must be made by god
what do muslim say about the design argument
the world is in perfect balance and is ordered to sustain life
and due to the earth having complex and independent parts in which make it whole it could only be created by an all powerful being which can only be god
“indeed in the creation of the heavens and the earth…, who remembers Allah”
what do christian say about the design argument
christian William Paley argued that
the working of a watch are so intricate that they must be designed and made by a watchmaker similarly the universe is so complex that it must be designed by a designer of who can only be god
“In his hand is the life of every creature and the breath of all mankind.”
what are oppositions to the design argument
some people say that the reason why everything is in order is due natural selection or the survival of the fittest by which the strongest animals survive creating order
some say that the world isn’t in order due to the suffering in the world as this proves that there is no designer or god because a good god would not have designed and allowed bad things such as natural disasters and evil to occur in his creation
what is the first cause argument
states that there must be an uncaused cause that made everything happen such as god as could isnt created by anything
what is the reasoning for the first argument
- everything that exist has a reason for its existence
- as the universe also exist there must be a reason for its existence
3.though there must be something which existent that does not have a reason for existence such as an all powerful being
- that all powerful being can only god
argument against first cause
. atheist argue that if everything that exist has a cause , who or what caused god and as there is no answer for this the first cause argument is contradictory to its self
.there are too many different backstories or reason for the creation of the universe so we do not know which if not any are true
what is the argument for miracles
seemingly impossible events that cannot be explained by scientific facts proves the existence of a higher power such as god
what are objection arguments towards miracles
athiest may argue:
.miracles are no more than coincidences
. they may be explained by science that we have not yet discovered
. miracles such as healing could be do to wrongly diagnosed disease
of adrenaline spikes
. therefore what appear to be miracles have nothing to do with god so cannot prove that god exist
what are Muslim views in response to miracles
. for Muslim belief in miracles is not a strong reason for the existence of god though are a few which hold significant value such as:
.the revelation of the Quran to prophet Muhammad as no human could write such a book
. prophet Muhammed’s ascent to heaven can be seen as a miracle in terms of religious experiences
what are Christian views in response to miracles
. christians view miracles as evidence of Gods existence and work in the world as it is believed
. jesus worked many miracles such as healing and bringing the dead back to life
. jesus incarnation and resurrection are considered the most important miracles in christianity
. Lourdes , religious place in france, is believed to be a place of which miracles have occurred
what is the problem of evil
the argument non believers or atheist use to try disprove the existence of god as if god is all loving then why is there evil and suffering in the world
leading to the fact that god does not exist
what do muslim say in order to argue against the problem of evil
. if god constantly itervened with actions of humans then they wouldnt have free will
. the devil or Shatan control people, making sin causing suffering
. god is all knowing so allows evil for reason we cannot comprehend
"”only what God has decreed will happen”
“god doesnt change the condition of people for the worse unless they change it themselves”
what do christian say in order to argue against the problem of evil
. god gives people free will
. Adam and eve created original sin with their disobedience of god#
. Christian believe god to be all knowing
“the highest knowledge of god is of which we cannot not know”
what is special revelation
when god makes himself known to a person through a personal experiences
it is usually seen as life changing to that specific individual
what are christian examples of special revelation
Mary received a special revelation from the angle gabriel that she was to be pregnant with jesus
“she was pregnant through the holy spirit”
what are muslim examples of special revelation
when angle jibril revealed the Quran to the prophet muhammad
““Indeed, We sent the Qur’an down during Laylat Al Quadr”
what is a vision
a vision involves seeing something that shows something the nature of god
what are some examples of vision in christianity
sauls vision on the Damascus road of which he experienced a blinding light and was spoken to by Jesus
what is general revelation
when god makes himself known through ordinary experiences such as nature
what is an example of genral revelation in islam
The Quran mentions the concept of divine inspiration, or “ilhām,” which is a type of revelation that is not directed at prophets but is a gentle prompting of the heart.
“And the soul and He who proportioned it inspired it
what is an example of general revelation christianity
christian believe that genral revelation of god is shown through the natural world, the beauty of creation, and a basic awareness of right and wrong within individuals
