Definition
Excessive production of atypical and immature keratin
Affects malpighi epithelia
Skin and the mucous membranes (oral, esophageal, vaginal)
Ortokerarotic (without nuclei)
Parakeratotic (retained nuclei)
Etiology
Primary: vitA and zn deficiency
Congenital form in cattles
In esophageal mucosa, occurs injury through reflux of gastric acid
Secondary: low free fatty acids, alterations of the intestinal flora, bacterias and virus
Gross
Skin: thickened, rough
Epithelial mucosa: loses its smooth, shine and becomes dull and white
On mucous membrane appears a thin, yellowish and shiny membrane
Micro
Incomplete keratinized cells
Cells with vacuolar degeneration
Evo
Zinc suplementation, gastric ulcer, bacterial dermatitis
