  • inspect or cause to be inspected, on a random basis, assigned clothing lockers, assigned gun lockers, assigned desks, cabinets or other storage facilities in their unit
  • ensure the gun lockers are secure at all times
  • ensure that except in regard to the inspection of gun lockers, members are given a reasonable opportunity to be present during inspections.
  • Notwithstanding the foregoing, an inspection may be conducted by a Staff Sergeant or Detective Sergeant if the respective member is absent provided another member is present.

Staff Sergeants General Responsibilities

Staff Sergeants SHALL:

A
  • at the commencement of their tour of duty, be the Officer in Charge, unless otherwise directed by their Unit Commander, and SHALL assume all the responsibilities of that position
  • upon commencement of their duties, familiarize themselves with matters that have arisen in the previous tour of duty that may subsequently result in inquiries and SHALL review any relevant entries in the unit’s records
  • at the conclusion of their tour of duty, communicate to the relieving officer such information to enable the relieving officer to carry out their duties
  • immediately notify the investigative personnel assigned to their unit of any serious occurrence falling within their jurisdictional boundaries.

Detective Sergeants General Responsibilities

Detective Sergeants SHALL:

A
  • be responsible for the efficient operation of their area of supervision
  • ensure that all matters coming to their attention are properly investigated and the necessary action taken
  • be responsible for the assignment of cases to investigative personnel
  • ensure that assigned cases are properly investigated and prepared for court
  • ensure that files and records in the investigative office are properly maintained and purged in accordance with the City of Toronto Municipal Code, Chapter 219, Article I, Records Retention Schedule (Record Retention Schedule)
  • ensure that reliefs are addressed regularly by investigative personnel to advise them of current criminal activity and other items of professional interest
  • ensure that information on wanted persons and photographs of active criminals is properly posted on bulletin boards
  • maintain proper liaison with the Officer in Charge
  • ensure that the Officer in Charge is informed of all major events and matters of particular interest.
