A

Some Christians may not accept pacifism as they believe that sometimes fighting is necessary to bring about peace and protect others. An example is World War Two where many people fought for the allies to save people from the actions of the Nazi Party, e.g Jews from holocaust

“Defend the weak and the fatherless”
which suggests that fighting is justified to protect the vulnerable

Some Christians accept pacifism as it is a part of the ten commandments (doesnt preach violence and the fifth commandment is to not kill) and Jesus was seen as a pacifist.

“Blessed are the peacemakers” promotes peace

Some Christians such as the Quakers support pacifism as they believe that a part of God is within everyone, so attacking someone would be attacking God

Muslims believe that forgiveness is important to peace. Everyone makes mistakes and deserves a second chance. Allah is merciful and Muslims should follow his example and try to forgive others when they do wrong.

According to Muslims, reconciliation is needed in order to live in an ordered and peaceful world as Allah intends

Some Muslims recognise that war is necessary and sometimes required as a last resort, Just war theory supports this. Also can be used as an act of self defence to protect the innocent and the oppressed Other Muskims may believe that war is never the right choice believing that peace and reconciliation are at the heart of Islam
26
Holy war christianity
A holy war is one where the religious believers think God is on their side and they are therefore fighting because it is the right thing to do. Some Christians may be pacifist and reject war Bible has general message of peace and Jesus was given the title Prince of Peace. Quotes recognise the importance of peace and that holy war is therefore wrong Some passages from the Bible seem to suggest that war may sometimes be the right action "I did not come to bring peace, but a sword" One reason why many Christians oppose war is because some chrsitians such as the Qaukers believe in pacifism as this is what they believe Jesus followed and teached, as he often chose peace with his enemies. In the bible it says "Blessed are the peacemakers" supporting the idea of peace However one reason why christians support holy war is because they believe that they are fighting for a holy cause, such as to protect Christians who are oppressed. In the bible it says "I did not come to bring peace, but a sword" which suggests violence may be necessary. Crusaders are an example of Christians supporting holy wars
27
Non religious attitudes to holy war
Atheists are against holy wars as they do not believe in God and that religion would never be a justifiable reason for war
28
Holy war islam
Holy war is only justifiable in cases where the intention is to defend the religion of Islam. This can involve: protecting the freedom of Muslims to practise their faith protecting Muslims against an attack Teachings about Holy war: Be declared by a religious leader Be a last resort Avoid harming innocent civillians Be for reasons of defence beliefs about holy war: Muslims believe holy war is justified in cases where it is seen as necessary to defend Islam. In the Quran it says "Fight in God's cause against those who fight you, but do not overstep the limits" suggesting that it is acceptable to use violence for self defense and Allah. Muslims also believe there are certain conditions for holy war. These include war being a last resort and the need to avoid harming innocent civillians. This is because the Quran teaches that Allah created all life and life is therefore sacred.
29

32
Christian actions and teachings

The Parable of the Sheep and Goats strongly encourages Christians to take action to help those in need as Jesus explains that helping a person, nobmatter their status, is the dame as helping Jesus himself and is therefore a duty for all christians
33

Focuses on short term and long term projects to bring relief in emergencies and after war and conflict and to help rebuild communities They do this because Islam teaches compassion and justice. In the Quran it says "Let there be no compulsion in religion" showing that no one should be harmed for their beliefs, encouraging Muslims to support all victims of war and bring peace.
35
Pacifism in Islam
Islam is not a pacifist religion and many Muslims recognise that sometimes war and fighting struggle needed in order to bring peace Islam teaches the importance of working together and reconciliation and trying to achieve peace.
