Employment is work carried out in return for payment.
What is an employee ?
An employee is a person who works for others in return for payment.
What is an employer ?
An employer is a person who hires people to do work for them in return for payment.

What is labour force ?
Labour force consists of all the people who are available for work.
What does labour force not include ?
People who are retired.
Those who are still in school, college or on training courses.
Those who did not wish to work outside the home.
What are the three main area employed in Ireland is grouped into ?
What is work ?
Work is any activities that requires effort.
What is agriculture ?
This sector includes all people employed in farming, forestry , and fishing. Agriculture is the smallest sector for workers.
What is industry ?
This sector includes all the people that are employed by firms that manufacture goods as well as those firms involved in building and construction.
What is services ?
This sector is the biggest employer in Ireland and includes all those people who work for firms and other organisations providing services to the consumer e.g finance, insurance, communication, transport, administration, teachers and gardaí.
What is unemployment ?
Unemployment, Is when people are willing and able to work and unable to find a suitable job.
What is the help for unemployment ?
🔵 A regular payment ( Jobseekers benefit ) which is paid to unemployed people by the department of Social Protection.
🔵 Programmes such as FAS are organisations that help the unemployed and give them new skills to get a job.
🔵More benefits are given to the unemployed to help them get a job such as medical cards, food/fuel vouchers and rent supplements to help decrease their daily expenses.
What are the reasons for unemployment ?
🔶 Competition between firms means that some businesses have to close down or let some workers go to reduce their costs
🔶 New technology means that many jobs can now be done by machines.
🔶 The economy may be going through a recession, which can lead to fewer goods and services are purchased. As a result some workers are let go.
What is redundancy ?
Sometimes firms must let some of their staff go because there is no work for them to do. This may be because there has been a reduction in demand for the firms products or because the firm needs to reduce their costs.
What are the rights of the employees ?
To receive a fair wage for the work they do.
To be given safe and healthy work conditions.
To join a trade union if they wish to.
To receive the correct number of days of holidays. To be treated the same as other employees.
What are the responsibilities of employees ?
The employees should be honest and trustworthy.
He employee should so a fair days work for the money they receive.
The employee should be on time for work.
The employee should respect the property of the employer and not steal or damage it in any way.
What is self employment ?
Self employment is when people work for themselves and become self employed.
What are the rewards for being self employed ?
You are your own boss.
You can make all the decisions.
You can choose your own working hours.
You keep all the profits.
You do something you enjoy and are good at.
What are the risks of being self employed ?
You must provide all the money needed to start the business.
You could loose the money you invest in the business if things don't work out.
You might have to work long hours.
You are responsible for all areas of the business.
What is the public sector ?
Public sector refers to all those people who are employed by the state.
Give examples of the public sector.
County council workers
Doctors that work in hospitals
Nurses that work in hospitals
Give examples of private sector workers.
What is an organisation structure ?
An organisation structure shows the position of each person in the business from the owners right down to the most junior employees.
What is the supervisor ?
The supervisor is the person on the factory floor who is given responsibility to make sure that others are carrying out there job properly.
What is the managing director ?
The managing director is the most senior employee in the firm and is in charge of the day-to-day running of the business.
