Anabolic steroids
Drugs that mimic the male sex hormone testosterone and promote bone and muscle growth. Taken by athletes. Can increase chance of heart attack and cause infertility.
Beta blockers
Drugs that are used to control heart rate and have a calming and relaxing effect. Used in snooker, archery, shooting. Can cause nausea, diarrhoea, tiredness, depression.
Diuretics
Drugs that elevate the rate of urine excretion. Used in boxing & horse racing as you lose weight to fit into weight groups. Causes dehydration, headaches, dizziness.
EPO
Increases the number of red blood cells, a type of peptide Hormone. Used in cycling and marathon running. Can thicken the blood, and increase the risk of a heart attack or stroke.
Narcotic analgesics
Can be used to reduce and mask pain, used in most sports. Can cause a loss of concentration, balance and coordination.
Stimulants
Have an effect on the nervous System, increase mental or physical alertness. Used in American football. Can cause insomnia, anxiety, irritability, high blood pressure.
