Respiratory System Flashcards

Alveoli
Have a thin lining and needs to be moist and clean for gaseous exchange to work. If they don’t work effectively it’ll affect our performance.
What do the alveoli Do?
Oxygen in the alveoli diffused into the deoxygenated blood, haemoglobin carries the oxygen around the body. Carbon dioxide diffuses out of the blood into the alveoli, this is then breathed out.
Immediate effects
Breathing becomes deeper, faster and stronger.
Oxygen debt occurs
Long term effects
Improves efficiency of the lungs & increases lung capacity.
Increases tidal volume
Increases vital capacity
Increases amount of alveoli available for gaseous exchange
Vital capacity
The largest amount of air that can be breathed in and out of the lungs by the most forceful inspiration and expiration
Tidal volume
The amount of air breathed in and out of the lungs with each breath.
