Plant responses Flashcards
(13 cards)
What are 3 abiotic stresses to a plan?
Temperature, Light and water
What are 3 physical defences against herbivory plants have?
Thorns, Spines and Bark
What are the 3 chemical defences of plants (just names)?
Alkaloids
Pheromones
Tannins - not really in spec (makes taste bitter / toxic)
What are Alkaloids + E.g ?
E.g - Nicotine
These are chemicals which are toxic to insects so prevents herbivory and enables survival and reproduction
What are Pheromones?
When pheromones are signalled to neighbouring plants it stims the production of more callose so they are more difficult to consume. Enabling survival and reproduction
What is tropism?
When a part of plant has directional growth to a stimuli
What is + and - phototropism?
+ = when a plant grows towards light
- = vice versa
What is + and - Geo/Gravitropism?
+ = When the roots of a plant grown down w the force of gravity
- = when the shoot grows against the force of gravity
Why do plants bend toward a stimulus?
This is because there is a high conc of auxins on one side and not the other. So one side is growing more than the other which causes the bend
What do AUXINS do? (3)
- Stimulate cell elongation
-Inhibit leaf loss - Maintain apical dominance/inhibit lateral growth
What does GIBBERELIN do? (3)
- Stim seed germination
- Stim cell elongation
- Stim stomatal closure
What does ETHENE do?
-Stim leaf loss
- Stim fruit ripening
What are 4 differences between Plant and Animal Hormones?
Plants- Produced in many plant tissue, Transported cell to cell, Acts on most cells, slower response
Animals - Produced only in endocrine glands, transported via blood, Acts only on specific cells, Faster response
