plants Flashcards
(13 cards)
what is epidermis?
outermost layer of cells covering the stem, root, leaf, flower, fruit and seed parts of a plant
what is palisade mesophyll?
a row of cells located below the upper epidermis - photosynthesis
what is spongy mesophyll?
allows the interchange of gases that are need for photosynthesis
what is xylem?
a vascular tissue that transports water throughout a plant’s body
what is phloem?
a vascular tissue in charge of transport and distribution of the organic nutrients
what are meristems?
regions unspecialised cells in plants that are capable of cell division
how are root hair cells adapted to their function?
taking up water and mineral ions by having a large surface area to increase the rate of absorption
how is xylem adapted to its function?
xylem consists of dead cells that forms a continuous hollow tube
how is phloem adapted to its function?
cells are joined end to end and contain holes in the end cell walls
what is transpiration?
the evaporation and movement of water away from the plant’s leaves from the inside of the plant
what is translocation?
the transport of dissolved material within a plant
how does temperature affect transpiration?
the rate of evaporation and diffusion increases as the particles have more energy
what is the role of stomata and guard cells in the control of gas exchange and water loss?
stomata regulate gas exchange between the plant and environment and control of water loss by changing the size of the stomatal pore
