respiration Flashcards
(11 cards)
cellular respiration
an exothermic reaction which transfers energy from glucose and is continuously occurring in living cells
metabolism
all chemical processes that occur in living organisms in order to maintain life
what is aerobic respiration?
occurs with enough oxygen and is the most efficient way to transfer energy from glucose. It happens continuously in plants and animals in the mitochondria
aerobic respiration word equation
glucose + oxygen > carbon dioxide + water
anaerobic respiration
without oxygen when it is unable to keep up with the demands of aerobic respiration
anaerobic respiration word equation
glucose > lactic acid
why do we prefer not to use anaerobic respiration?
-incomplete breakdown of glucose molecules
-build up of lactic acid
why does heart rate increase during exercise?
the heart contracts faster and increases blood circulation resulting in oxygenated blood reaching the muscles more quickly
what is oxygen debt?
anaerobic respiration occurs when there is no oxygen available so it produces an oxygen debt. the debt is equivalent to the total amount of oxygen required to oxidise the lactic acid formed from this process into carbon dioxide and water
what happens to accumulated lactic acid in the body?
oxidised to carbon dioxide and water or converted to glucose, the glycogen - glycogen levels in the liver and muscles can then be restored
examples of metabolism
building glucose from carbon dioxide
