1
Q

Name the four things that are needed for photosynthesis

A

1) light
2) chlorophyll
3) carbon dioxide
4) water

2
Q

What is the definition of a limiting factor?

A

When there is a lack of something a plant needs and so the rate of photosynthesis slows

3
Q

Name the three limiting factors for photosynthesis

A

1) lack of light- as light level is raised it will increase steadily, but only up to a certain point where CO2 or temperature limits photosynthesis
2) lack of CO2- same process as light intensity, however this time the limiting factor would be light or temperature
3) temperature- if you increase temp the rate of photosynthesis increases until the temp is too high and enzymes denature

4
Q

How do plants use glucose?

A

1) for respiration
2) for making fruits- glucose is turned into sucrose for storing in fruits
3) making cell walls- glucose is converted into cellulose for making cell walls
4) making proteins- glucose is combined with nitrates to make amino acids which are made into proteins
5) stored in seeds- glucose turned into lipids for storing in seeds
6) stores as starch- glucose turned into starch and stored in roots stems and leaves for use in winter

5
Q

Name the two minerals for healthy growth in plants and the deficiency symptoms for them

A

1) nitrates- plants without nitrates will show stunted growth as proteins cannot be made
2) magnesium- plants without magnesium will have yellow leaves as magnesium is needed to make chlorophyll which makes the leaves green

If the plant is left short of either for to long, it might die

6
Q

What is the equation for photosynthesis?

A

Carbon dioxide + water -> glucose + oxygen
