Where are platelets produced
- bone marrow
What do platelets do
- produce a chemical once stimulated by exposure to air
- chemical causes fibrinogen to convert into fibrin (which is insoluble)
- fibrin acts as a mesh
- which traps red blood cells
- this prevents:
- further blood loss
- microorganisms entering
- clot develops into a scab
- this protects the damaged tissue while new skin grows
