Rise of Pro - Republicanism 1924?

A

2 elections indicated a return of support for the republic.
May 1924 - 61% of vote
Dec 1924 - 67% of vote
Nazi vote 6.5% to 3%
Decline in communist support
DNVP joined gov in Jan 1925- 1st contribution

Decline of Far right political extremism 1928?

A

Nazi vote 2.6% - 12 seats
Bavarian People’s party and Reich Party of the German middle class overtook them.
Unknown random parties almost caught them : Farmers party - 9 seats
KPD on the rise

Why the decline in far right extremism?

A

Dawes plan meant 800 million mark loan and new currency so Germany is a lot more stable and feels prosperous.
Means people support moderate parties who supported republic.
Hitler banned from public speaking till 1926 due to Munich Putsch - no effective campaigns.

Why were coalitions struggling?

A

Govs couldn’t plan for long term
Little issues - flags - destroyed cabinets
SPD and DNVP wouldn’t work together
Moderate parties didn’t have enough seats to command a Reichstag majority
Grand coalition offered some stability but disputed budget ,foreign policy only survived cause of müller stresemann relationship.
