Polymers Flashcards
(10 cards)
What are the 3 differnet types of polymers
Thermoplastics
Thermoforming plastics
Elastomers
What are thermoplastics
They have plastic memory, can be heated to be softened and returm to its original shape. Can be recycled.
What are thermosetting plastics
Does not melt and cannot return to original shape, have very strong close links in their structure. They are perminently formed
What are elastomers
Polymers that have a good elasticity, can be distorted under pressure but returns back, long chain molecules
Examples of thermoplastics
Nylon, Polypropeline, Low density polyethylene (LDPE), High Density polystyrene (HIPS), Polyvinyl chloride (PVC), High Density Polyethylene (HDPE)
Examples of Thermosetting plastics
Polyester resin, Melamine Formaldehyde, Urea formaldehyde, Epoxy resin
Examples of Elastomers
Natural RUbber, Buradine Rubber, Silicone, Neoprene
What are polymer enhancments and give examples of some
Enhancing polymers better, this is doen by adding additivies into the stock form. Additives range from 0% - 50% in the stock form.
Examples - Lubricants, Pigments, Biodigradable
What are Biodigradable polymers
Can be designed to degrade in as little time as a few months - can be caused from light, liquid and oxygen
What are the different type of stock forms for Polymers
- Sheet
- Film
- Granules
- Rods
- Foam
- Powder
