Wasting Processes Flashcards

Q

Milling Process

A
  • The machine process of using rotary cutters to remove material.
  • It works in a similar way to routering.
  • Due to harder materials being cut, milling machines have more torque bend use more durable cutting tools.

Q

Metal Turning

A
  • Done on a centre lathe (metal lathe) which is a machine that is used to turn a material so that it can be shaped to a cylindrical shape or bowl.
  • A high speed steel cutter moves left to right and towards the centre so the material can be shaped symmetrically.
The machine may also be CNC controlled which proved greater accuracy and speed.

Flame Cutting

A
  • A wasting process that uses oxy-acetylene gas.
  • Used to cut a low carbon steel and alloy steel plate.
  • Heated to 3,550 degrees.

Plasma Cutting

A
  • Plasma is a super-heated ionised gas that is electrically conductive.
  • Plasma arc cutting machines are used to cut components accurately, quickly and economically from sheet metal.

Laser Cutting

A
  • A laser cutter uses a computer aided design (CAD) to cut or engrave complex shapes out of materials.
  • An example of this processed being used is when cutting the main part out of the nightlight.

Punching/Stamping

A
  • For components requiring a series of holes o be cut in them.
  • It is often quicker to punch holes rather than drilling them.
