Q

Explain the impact of Matthew Perry’s confrontation with Japan in the mid-19th century (1853).

A

The presence of “black ships” in Tokyo Bay ended the Tokugawa Shogunate, restored the Emperor, and opened up Japan to trade and diplomatic relations after about 250 years of isolation. Furthermore, the threats of Commodore Perry led to industrialization in Japan, as the state feared its independence from American intrusion and were forced to industrialize.
