Potential Question #6- Frederick I vs. Church / Italy AND Frederick II’s impact Flashcards
(5 cards)
How did Frederick I create new struggles between emperors and Popes?
He wanted to take more control of northern Italy
People in Italy resisted with help from the Pope
They formed the Lombard League & defeated him
How did Frederick I get around the Lombard League?
Frederick I arranged a marriage with his son and princess of southern Italy
This was a smart move – he could now come to Italy claiming he was simply visiting family.
Frederick II (grandson of Frederick I)-
Lived a lavish lifestyle and was very cultured and educated
He spent little time in Germany because he wanted control of Italy
He lost power struggles to many Popes
Consequences of Frederick II’s desires toward Italy-
While Frederick II was in Italy, the nobles in Germany reclaimed much of their power
He undid all the progress of centralizing power that the rulers before him made – just like king John of England
When Frederick II returned to Germany, he found he had little power — he was now more a figurehead than a ruler
(Officially, the Holy Roman Empire survived)
The reality was that Germany was now many independent feudal states with each noble controlling the affairs of his own lands
Frederick I and II had very —— effects on the Holy Roman Empire.
