Relationship between norms & health behaviours
These norms influence what people perceive as acceptable or unacceptable behaviours in relation to their health.
Proscriptive norms
What you shouldn’t do, they prohibit certain behaviours considered harmful or socially unacceptable.
-discourages risky or unhealthy behaviours; smoking, drinking, drug use, sedentary lifestyle.
-limit unhealthy actions.
Prescriptive norms
What you should do, they encourage/ prescribe behaviours considered beneficial.
-promote health enhancing actions: exercising, healthy eating, getting regular checkups, wearing sunscreen.
-promote beneficial actions.
Popular norms
What most people do, or what’s perceived as common behaviour, regardless if it’s healthy or not.
-can either support or undermine health.
-reflect what people believe is normal.
