what are pressure groups
groups that try and bring a particular interest in attention of public and government- make government reconsider the law on certain areas, eg 2007 ban on smoking in public places due to public and medical opinion. eg also 2024 ban on vapes
what are sectional pressure groups
exist to represent the interests of a particular group of people, often work groups or professionals, eg AA representing motorists
what are cause pressure groups
exist to promote a particular cause, different types like environmental, animal welfare, human rights groups
what are strategies of pressure groups
lobbying mps
petition
protest/ marches
online media
stunts (illegal)
limitation of conflicting interests
want opposing things, such as the ban on fox hunting 2004 ordered by the league against cruel sports but countryside alliance wanted it to continue
limitation of it being undemocratic
pressure groups are seeking to impose their ideas even when the majority of the public do not support the view
strength of pressure groups
wide range of issues drawn to attention as there are varying issues from different pressure groups. raise important issues and make government more aware, eg with enironmental issues
