Principles of Exercise Testing Flashcards

1
Q

What is the Bruce protocol?

A

method for testing exercise - involving increases in speed, and grade over set times

Q

What are the reasons for undertaking cardiopulmonary exercise testing?

A

test exercise capacity, predict disease risk (cardiac stress test), differential diagnosis (cardiac, pulmonary or vascular limitation), assessment of severity of disease, test pre operative risk (low VO2 max predicts poor surgical outcomes), disability evaluation, exercise prescription (prescribe exercise at a percentage of maximal capacity), test the effectiveness of exercise therapy

Q

What is oxygen pulse and what does it measure?

A

VO2/HR - measures stroke volume

Q

What is double product?

A

a measure of the ability to increase blood pressure during exercise

Q

What information can be gained from a lactate response curve?

A

the fitter you are the more delayed the lactate production - heart disease will have an earlier lactate production due to reduced oxygen delivery to the muscle

Q

What is a sub maximal HR response?

A

HR is measured at sub maximal intensity and then compared with a predicted maximal heart rate for age to give an indirect measure of VO2 max

Q

What is PWC150?

A

the power output required to get a hear rate of 150 - the higher this is the fitter you are

Q

Reasons for exercise testing cessation?

A

fatigue, drop in blood pressure, chest pain, ataxia, dizziness, syncope, dysrhythmias, ST segment changes, shortness of breath

Q

What is a better predictor of performance - VO2 max or lactate threshold and why?

A

lactate threshold is a better predictor of performance because VO2 max doesn’t give any information about how you use the oxygen

Q

What is the relationship between lactate threshold, glycogen use and fatigue?

A

the higher the lactate threshold the less glycogen used meaning it takes longer to fatigue
