Proteins Flashcards
(7 cards)
Functions
Exchange, transport, enzymes, hormones, structural support.
Formation of polypeptides
AA join through condensation reaction to create a peptide bond. Join to form long chains on the ribosomes
Haemoglobin
Globular protein transports oxygen and carbon dioxide in the blood, has 4 polypeptide chains.
Primary structure
The types and sequence of AA within a polypeptide chain
Secondary structure
Polar groups within chain react with each other and form hydrogen bonds. Produce alpha helix or beta pleated sheet
Tertiary structure
Stabilised trough interactions among the r-groups, includeing ionic bonds, hydrogen bonds, disulphide bonds, disulphide bridges, and hydrophobic interactions. Results in fibrous or globular forms
Quaternary structure
Multiple folds to create a bigger structure
