Water Flashcards
(10 cards)
hydrogen bond
Weak electrostatic force of attractions between the hydrogen bond on one molecule and an oxygen atom on another
Metabolite
A substance made or used when the body breaks down food, drugs, chemicals or its own tissues. Water is a necessary reactant and often a byproduct.
Solvent
When substances dissolve in water there negative positive and negative ions are kept apart. Ions are free to move around and react with molecules.
Cohesion
Water molecules stick together- useful in transport- water travels Ina continuous column, drag dissolves substances with it
Surface tension
Cohesive forces between liquid molecules, they stick together forming a surface film
Specific heat capacity
The amount of heat per unit mass required to raise the temperature by one degree C
Latent heat of vaporisation
The amount of energy needed to charge liquid to gas.
Latent heat of fusion
Freezing water involves a lot of heat energy to be lost
Density
Water is most dense at 4°C, ice floats
