Q

what is the blueprint of psychological/behaviourist treatment of schizophrenia

Q

How does token economy as treatment work

A

INITIALLY through the process of classical conditioning, the schizophrenic learns the vlaue of a token to be used as reward. –> via being presented a token alongside a primary reinforcer such as food, comfort etc. This can then be used as a process of operant conditioning as REINFORCEMENT FOR GOOD BEHAVIOUR.
tokens are then used by the individuals which can then be exchanged for other things such as; watching tv, listening to music, etc.
This again works as part of operant conditioning to encourage good behaviour.
This system can be used to change all behaviours of the schizophrenic

Q

what is a strength of token economy as a treatment of schizophrenia

A

P; One strength of token economy is that it can be tailored to the individual needs of the patient.
E: based on operant conditioning and involve rewarding patients with tokens for engaging in desirable behaviours, such as self-care or social interaction
E: allows treatment to focus on specific behaviours that a particular patient struggles with, making it more personalised and relevant to their daily functioning. For example, one patient may be rewarded for maintaining hygiene, while another may focus on attending therapy sessions.
L; This individualised approach increases the likelihood of improving functioning and quality of life in institutional settings.

Q

what is a limitation of token economies as a treatment for schizophrenia

A

P; : A significant limitation of token economy systems is that they can be seen as discriminatory and ethically questionable.
E: In some cases, patients with schizophrenia may be denied access to small comforts or privileges—such as watching television or having visitors—unless they earn them through desired behaviours.
E: : This approach can be viewed as unfair, as it punishes individuals for symptoms that are often beyond their control, makes p.t feel dehumanised/coerced.
L: Therefore, token economies may raise serious ethical concerns, potentially reducing their acceptability and appropriateness as a treatment for schizophrenia.
