The interactionist approach to schizophrenia Flashcards
(15 cards)
what does the interactionist approach propose the cause of schizophrenia was
a combination of psychological and biological factors which cause sz
what intercationist model shows how schizophrenia is developed
the diathesis stress model
according to diathesis stress model we are _____ _________ to schizophrenia
genetically predisposed
who researched inheritance variation in the chance of attaining sz
GOTTESMAN
what did Gottesman find when looking into genetic vulnerbaility to obtaining sz
the closer the relation of a sz, the
higher the genetic chance of inheriting sz
what was the concordance rate for monozygotic twins with SZ
48%
what idea did ralph suggest about diathesis of schizophrenia
he proposed that early trauma for a child as the diathesis as this can alter brain activity and structure in a developing brain
what are examples of stress which can cause the onset of SZ
parenting styles (harsh + erratic) and cannabis use (interferring with the dopamine system increasing chances by up to 7 times)
what does the stress part of the model account for
it accounts for the remaining vulnerability referring tot he environment in 2 ways: life events and urbanisation
example of diathesis stress model in action
- childhood trauma combined with high genetic chance of attainng sz can cause its onset
TRUE or FALSE: rural environments have a higher chance of leading to onset of sz
FALSE
urban environments provide an increased chance of attaining schizophrenia compared to rural environments which combined with genetic factors could also complete the diathesis stress model to SZ
what was the interactionist approaches treatment for schizophrenia
a combination of biologicala nd psychological treatments should be given to individual with SZ
why does the interactionist approach suggets to use both psychological and biological treatment
Its to treat the cause of the condition but also the symptoms of the sz
what is an issue with the interactionist approach
P: one issue with the interactionist approach is that its difficult to identify the casual stress of SZ
E: this approach suggests that the stress provides the onset for the disorder in combination with genetic chance e.g an urban environment causing the onset in someone with a high genetic vulnerability
E: however, there may be many other factors causing that stress as there may be other factors involved that we cannot differentiate form stress e.g for urban environments we should also include socioeconomic background as part of this
L: therefore, we must question the applicableness of this theory as it has limited explanatory power due to its failure in defining a cause for the disorder
strength of interactionist approach for SZ
P;A strength of the interactionist approach is that it has important implications for treatment
E: By recognising that schizophrenia results from a combination of biological and psychological factors, it supports the use of holistic treatment plans.
E: This means that instead of relying solely on one type of treatment, such as antipsychotic medication or therapy alone, a combined approach, is likely to be more effective
L: Therefore, the interactionist approach is more practical and realistic, as it promotes more comprehensive and personalised care for individuals with schizophrenia
