holds head up-15min
sternal- 30min
standing- 60min
nursing- 120min

24
Q

neonatal acute respiratory distress syndrome (NARDs)

A

tachypnea, cyanotic, respiratory acidosis

25
colostrum requirements
10%BW in first 2-6 hours ideal
26
TP cutoff for FPT
TP>5.5 g/dL in healthy neonates
27
hypos of recumbent neonates
hypothermia hypoglycemia hypovolemia hypocarbia
28
absent palpebral reflex in scouring calf
elevated D-lactate
29
when to give IV fluids in calves
8% or more dehydrated
30
what type of abx for sick neonates
broad spectrum, IV bacteriocidal (ampicillin sodium great option)
31
PGF2-a
induces lysis of CL
32
progestins
synchronize or suppress ovulation, mainly use CIDR inserts, works as artificial CL
33
GnRH agonists
induces ovulation of dominant follicle via LH surge
34
lactational anestrus
pigs
35
what day does the embryo enter the uterus
day 6
36
when should you be able to feel a membrane slip?
28 days or later
37
what blocks lysis of the CL in cattle + SR? pigs?
INF-t secreted by trophoblast 14-18d pigs- estradiol
38
which animals have a diffuse placenta?
camelids and pigs
39
which species are completely CL dependent during prenancy?
goats, pigs, camelids
40
5 positive signs of pregnancy
membrane slip amniotic vesicle palpation fetal palpation placentomes uterine artery fremitus (ipsilateral 110 days)
41
when are fetal counts best done in SR?
35-50d (embryos sometimes visible at 24d)
42
spit test in camelids
will spit at males after 11 days if pregnant
43
inducing parturition for CL dependent vs placental dependent
CL- prostaglandins placenta- dexamethasone
44
three ps
presentation (anterior if cranial, posterior, transverse) position (dorso-sacral, dorso-pubic, dorso-iliac) posture (extended or flexed extremities)
45
how to roll a R uterine torsion
lay on right side, roll feet over
46
hydroallantois
problem with dam, try to salvage the fetus
47
hydramnios
problem with the fetus, pear shape, px bad for calf
48
lack of progress worrying time in each species
cattle: mature 1 hour, heifer 2 hours SRs: 30min anytime actual frank blood or malodorous brown fluid
49
what drug aids in uterine relaxation
epinephrine
50
what approach will we use in a c-section with an emphysematous fetus
ventral midline or ventral paramedian
51
pig c section incision placement
paramammary or ventral-lateral
52
uterine closure
primary- utrecht final- cushing
53
uterine prolapse
always emergency, mortality rate 20% from rupture of uterine vessels
54
when should a BSE be done and why
30-60d before breeding season, sperm take 60d to mature if fixing problem
55
bull BSE minimums
34 cm by 24 months, 30% motility, 70% normal morphology
56
why are larger testicles desirable
produce more sperm and sire daughters that reach puberty earlier
